Aging and Mental Health: Positive Psychosocial and Biomedical Approaches (5th Edition)
Published in Textbook Binding by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (12 January, 1998)
Authors: Robert N., Md. Butler, Myrna I. Lewis, and Trey Sunderland
Average review score:

This is a superb text for all helping professionals.
I used an earlier edition of this text during my own doctoral training. That it has been revised and updated speaks to its excellence as a comprehensive text covering all aspects of aging and mental health. I will be using this text in my counseling classes because it is chock full of useful information, (practical, medical, and psychological,) and emphasizes " the dignity and worth of each individual irrespective of age." Professional counselors, psychologists, and all those who work with aging adults need to read this book and keep it as a ready reference. As the population ages we need to understand the special needs and attributes of older adults, as well as how aging is viewed in a diverse society.

I stayed up til 1am to finish this one!
What a great book! It's so easy to identify with the character - you'll feel like you are chatting with a friend, instead of reading a book. The end is right on target. You'll see what I mean when you get there! Treat yourself to this one --it's worth it!

Italian holiday
Published in 1881, this is chronicles the author's love for Italy and the rest he enjoyed there in a lifetime of holidays. Chapters concentrate on a specific town, castle or church with drawings and asides that provide context for his recollections. Reminds me of the difference between traveling and tourism.

A great American poltical thinker!
This book is the only one that can really convince you that Brownson ranks just below Tocqueville as a commentator on America. Lawler's introduction--A GREAT BOOK ON AMERICA IN ITSELF--is what will convince you.

Amite County and Mississippi Woman, Book Two (LA Plata County Series)
Published in Paperback by To Excel Inc (October, 1999)
Author: Luther Butler
Average review score:

A must book for Civil War buffs who love good novels.
I am the author, and LaPlata County Series, Book Two is the culmination of years of study about an era and part of the South my people helped develop. Both novels in this series are a tribute to both the Black and White people of Amite County Mississippi. After considerable research into Black English, I have made an attempt to write the dialogue of slaves and former slaves somewhat close to the way they spoke the language; this is not to ridicule but to preserve a way of life that needs preserved. (Book Cover) Luther Butler continues his LaPlata County Series. James Butler's (alias James Wilkerson) descendents find themselves caught up in a conflict that tears him and his Black comrade, Charles Ray, from the Amite County farm to a dangerous Yankee prisoner of war camp. MISSISSIPPI WOMAN continues the series after the Civil War. Nat Wilkerson's wife, Sally Ann, loses the Amite County farm and moves to Fort Worth, Texas where, for health reasons, two of her sons leave for LaPlata County, Colorado where the mountains touch the sky. A section of Fort Worth is called, "Hell's Half Acre." Here Bret Sloan took the exslaves from Mississippi and opened a house of prostitution. Like the characters in GONE WITH THE WIND, AMITE COUNTY'S people adjust to a South that is lost in gun smoke and fancy mirrors.

Apprenticed to Magic and Magic and the Qabalah

Revealing the path towards magical attainment
Whether you have an academic interest or are just amused by the occult, this is worthy of a good read. However, If you are an aspiring occultist with the need to understand what is expected of you to reach the "Doors of the Mysteries," then this classic is a must read for you.

Written in the first person singular, Walter Ernest Butler (an English occultist[1898-1978]and founder of Servants of the Light [SOL]) provides a compelling and simple tailored account of a craftsman (The Author), revealing to his apprentice (You), the path towards magical attainment. Butler's method of writing, using correspondence letters written to the reader, allows for an enjoyable, personalized experience--especially since he tries to premeditate what types of questions the reader might be thinking about or asking! (Being self absorbed and fascinated with Butler's creativity, I had a difficult time putting the book down. In fact, I read it several times already, and haven't found anything that compares with it.)

Since it was written to supplement the author's previous published books (i.e., "Magic, its Ritual, Power and Purpose", and "The Magician: His Training and Work", you will not find a lot of details on ritual magic per se; however, plenty of profound elements of magic are craftily employed and iterated upon to provide a clear picture of what's expected for a neophyte to know and understand.

For details on ritual magic and training I suggest reading the aforementioned books--good reads as well--or other books on this topic (e.g., "Modern Magic", by Donald Michael Kraig; "An Introduction to Ritual Magic", by Dion Fortune & Gareth Knight; "First Steps in Ritual", by Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki; "The Middle Pillar", by Israel Regardie; "Magic: In Theory and Practice", by Aleister Crowley; "Self Initiation into the Golden Dawn Tradition, by Chic and Sandra Cicero.)

For the serious student who plans to read all three Butler titles, although there is no set order in which to read these books, I suggest reading "Apprenticed to Magic" first, and then last. First, because it challenges the reader to examine their intentions for wanting to study and practice ritual magic. Last, because it will help clarify information that is presented in the other books.

As a note, to my understanding, Butler created this book like a correspondence course in magic at a time when correspondent courses were not so easily accessible, and hardly existent. Many aspirants who wanted to learn on their own were buying some of Butler's other published works and had questions that needed to be answered regarding the theory and practice of the rituals outlined in those books. So, they wrote him frequently. Well, imagine what it was like answering all of those letters! Therefore, "Apprenticed to Magic" became his answer to those many sort after answers that the "untrained" (i.e., those not belonging to an occult school, or the solo magician) needed.

Be aware though, that securing a copy of this book is not an easy task. In fact, it's a magical feat in itself. The book was first printed in 1962 and then in 1969. Either copy is very difficult to acquire and sometimes expensive. Should you find a copy, I hope you come to value this classic as much as I do--literally and figuratively! It was well worth the money.

Archie the Ugly Dinosaur
Published in Paperback by Barrons Juveniles (February, 1997)
Authors: M. Christina Butler, Val Biro, and Christina M. Butler
Average review score:

The Ugly Duckling Redux
My two-year old, crazy-about-dinosaurs daughter loved this book, and so do I. It is essentially a retelling of the Ugly Duckling fairy tale. Archie is small and unattractive, and one day his friends' teasing gets out of hand. His feelings are hurt and he runs off. His friends immediately realize that they have been mean and go off in search of him. When they find him, something wonderful has happened, and all is forgiven.

The drawings in this book are lovely. The story is simple but effective. And, for those of you who read a lot to your kids, there are not too many words, so it's a perfect "last but short" book before bed.

BABIES NEED BOOKS
Published in Hardcover by Atheneum (October, 1980)
Author: David Butler
Average review score:

A great present for new parents
I found this book invaluable because Dorothy Butler, a teacher, mother and now grandmother, sensibly explains why babies are never 'too young' to enjoy the shared experience of books and reading. As a first-time mother who's often short of time, I felt quite lost looking for books which would stimulate both my baby and me! Butler provides synopses of the titles which she has tried and tested on many children and useful booklists according to your child's age. (up to 6) I have bought almost all the recommended titles for my toddler and without exception, he's loved them all. Among her suggestions for babies and toddlers are classics like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" to the "Spot" series and new authors like Molly Bang and Sian Tucker. This book is listed 'hard to find' but it's worth the effort!
